CITY & NORTH ADELAIDE

When you’ve been in the game for more than 30 years, you see a change, or two.

This certainly rings true for Evan Williams at VANE Hair.

The hairdresser who has worked at the 127 Sturt St studio for three decades says the rise of social media is just one of those changes.

“I am still trying to get my head around the whole social media presence,” he says.

VANE Hair’s “old-school charm”, as one Facebook reviewer boasted, may have been the reason that helped the studio come out on top in The Messenger best of hairdresser poll.

The hairdresser won by just 13 votes ahead of Cabal on Gilbert St.

Leading a team of four, Mr Williams said he thanked all who voted.

“The team here at VANE would like to thank all our wonderfully loyal clients who voted for us,” he said.

What started as a single chair in her garage a decade ago has blossomed into Marcela Lastra’s dream hairdressing salon at Mawson Lakes.

She employs six staff at her Longko Salon — and, as well as being named Salisbury’s Citizen of the Year earlier this year, has been named the top hairdresser in the north and northeast by Messenger Community News readers.

Those titles fit perfectly with the name “Longko” — it means “chief salon” in the Mapuche dialect of her ancestors, the indigenous people of Chile.

“In my heart I know that people absolutely appreciate what we do, but to get the recognition makes it all worth it,” Mrs Lastra says.

“The community environment that we’ve built within our business is why the salon is so successful.”

Award-winning hair stylist Megan Panozzo’s passion for helping people goes much deeper than looks.

At her own In Awe Salon in Kingswood, Mrs Panozzo believes in the importance of being able to offer her clients sound advice in their times of need.

So much so, she has studied counselling to complement her skills in hairdressing.

“We hear all sorts of things and people will tell us things they won’t tell their best friend,” she says.

“Being with clients and being able to connect with people is important to me.

“For hairdressers to be able to really understand and have that counselling aspect in their training would be a game changer for this industry”

In Awe Salon dominated the Messenger Community News online poll.

Mrs Panozzo says the result is incredible.

“I have a real love for people that love my business and I really appreciate them,” she says.

“I wouldn’t be here without them.”
