Work has begun on UnitingSA’s $50 million West Lakes residential aged care precinct.
The development is part of the $1 billion WEST housing and retail development on the former Football Park site.
The five-storey complex will have 108 private rooms, 17 retirement living apartments overlooking the oval and an 18-bed specialist unit for patients suffering from dementia.
It will also house a cafe, hairdresser and allied health services, which will be open to the public.
More than 400 jobs are expected to be created during the build and 150 more once the precinct opened.
UnitingSA Chair Gael Fraser, who helped turn the first sod on Thursday, said the development would put aged care at the heart of the community.
“We wanted to ensure people could maintain important links to community, including shops and health care, without the need to drive,” Ms Fraser said.
She said the organisation was “excited” to be able to continue providing innovative aged care facilities especially in its centenary year.
Construction is expected to be complete by late 2020.
