Work has begun on the next phase of the billion-dollar redevelopment of Football Park – a $20 million community hub featuring a cafe, medical centre and allied health services.

The new building, which is part of Commercial & General’s WEST masterplanned community, will also incorporate a library on the ground floor, shared facilities and a boardroom for meetings and functions.

Levels one and two will be taken up by businesses and commercial tenants including medical and allied health facilities.

A general practice and pathology service will be available as well as physiotherapy, podiatry, group exercise and rehabilitation services.

More than 55 onsite car parks will be available in addition to street parking.

The facility is due for completion in September 2021.

The new building will be located within WEST’s new Charles Street precinct.

Commercial & General executive chairman Jamie McClurg said the WEST project offered a range of property options – from affordable to high-end – but it also created spaces and amenities for the broader community to enjoy.

“Beyond this, as a $1 billion project, it continues to create vital jobs at a critical time while also supporting the construction industry and associated businesses,” he said.

Mr McClurg said between 200 to 400 people were working on the project at various stages of the development.

City of Charles Sturt Mayor Angela Evans said the benefit to the local community from the new hub was two-fold.

“This is an exciting milestone because it puts us another step closer to opening the doors to our new community facility, which will incorporate the library and other community connections,” she said.

“Now more than ever we’ve seen how important spaces where the community can come together really are, and this will be a fantastic place to do just that with a whole host of facilities and services available for everyone to enjoy.

“More broadly, the WEST community is a wonderful drawcard for bringing new residents to the local area – people who are moving in, calling the City of Charles Sturt home and going on to frequent and support our local businesses.”

Construction on WEST’s sold-out new Ocea apartment building will also start in September, featuring 42 apartments and a cafe and other retail on ground level.

More than 500 residents are already living in the West development.

A major part of the redevelopment – UnitingSA’s $50 million aged-care project – is about eight months away from completion.

Mr McClurg said the wide range of living options meant high demand for the project – with about 20 homes being sold per month.
