Why Cr Arthur Mangos wants a new entrance into Adelaide airport, off Richmond Rd

A LOCAL councillor wants a new entrance to Adelaide Airport elevated as a priority. And he has firm ideas on how it would work.

A WEST Torrens councillor has renewed calls for the State Government to make Richmond Rd an Adelaide Airport entrance for taxis and buses to ease congestion on surrounding roads.

Cr Arthur Mangos said traffic snarls around the airport would only increase with ongoing growth and development — including plans for a $60m hotel and an Aldi supermarket.

He said removing airport taxis and buses from local roads would improve traffic flow and make the area more liveable for residents.

“It’s a high priority because you really need to get the traffic off Sir Donald Bradman Drive,” Cr Mangos said.

“If you reduce traffic on Sir Donald Bradman Drive it will make it easier to deal with more industry and expansion.

“Airport traffic increases by about 4 per cent every year and it is only going to get worse with ongoing development.”

In November 2014 West Torrens voted to offer a section of Richmond Rd, west of Marion Rd, to the government to fast-track better airport access.

The government responded a month later acknowledging the council’s request.

Cr Mangos said he was not aware of any further communication.

“It’s deeply disappointing,” he said.

“It makes common sense because Sir Donald Bradman Drive is very busy and Henley Beach Rd is very busy.

“There needs to be a proper analysis of traffic flow and this given serious consideration.”

He said the Richmond Rd entrance could also be a consideration for a proposed tram link to the airport.

The airport’s 2014 masterplan proposed a Richmond Rd entrance for taxis within five years.

Last week an airport spokesman said that had not changed.

A Transport Department spokeswoman said there was plans to improve airport access, including taxi, commercial vehicle and bus access from Richmond Rd, within five to 15 years.

She said the department was working with the council and airport to transfer ownership of the road, west of Marion Rd, at the “appropriate time”.
