Plans to hold an Australian Made concert at Thebarton Oval - more than three decades since the last one – are a step closer.
West Torrens Council at its latest meeting gave in-principle support to the SANFL for a concert to be held at the oval and the neighbouring Kings Reserve on New Year’s Day next year.
The backing was on the proviso an event management plan – with details including noise, traffic, public safety and alcohol management – be given to the council by August 15.
It must also include consent from SA Health and SA Police for the event to proceed.
The last time an Australian Made concert was held was January 1, 1987, when about 30,000 music fans filed into the Torrensville oval to watch INXS, Jimmy Barnes, Divinyls, Mental as Anything and other Aussie talent perform.
The new event would be held on January 1, 2021, from 11am to 11pm, with performers taking to the stage from 2pm, and was expected to attract about 25,000 people.
It would be organised by Weslo Holdings.

As part of the council’s support, the SANFL must pay $7500 to hire Kings Reserve and Thebarton Community Centre – which won’t be able to be used on the day – and pay a $20,000 bond.
The SANFL will also be responsible to repair any damage done to the oval or Kings Reserve on the day of the event.
A COVID Management Plan approved by SA Health would also have to be provided.
West Torrens Mayor Michael Coxon said the council was proud to support the SANFL’s proposal to hold the concert.
“We expect it to be good for business and great for the community,” Mr Coxon said.
Thebarton Oval has played host to a swag of some of the world’s best musicians, including Billy Joel in October 1987, Pink Floyd in February 1988 and John Farnham in December 1990.
