IT HAS served pies, pasties and all sorts of pastries for almost 150 years, and now a Port Adelaide icon is set for a fresh coat of paint.
The Mayfair Bakery and Patisserie — formerly Mayfair Homemade Cakes — on St Vincent St is undergoing renovations for the first time since it opened in 1870.
Owner Phil Donnelly and his father Peter have been slowly working on the popular bakery since taking over five years ago.
“We are gradually going through and giving it a touch- up, starting at the shopfront and renovating out the back in the kitchen, which was largely untouched,” Mr Donnelly, 26, of Royal Park, says.
“We have spent the last five years building up the business so now we have a little bit more time and money so we are getting stuck into it.”
The bakery was the former headquarters of the Baking Association of South Australia before being handed over to Barry Schultz, who operated the business for 55 years.
At the age of 80, Mr Schultz retired and sold the bakery to the Donnelly family in 2013.
“Port Adelaide has been fantastic for us as there is a real community down here,” he says.
“Everyone has jumped behind us as a family business as they respect what we are trying to do.
“It is great working in a family business as we wouldn’t have been able to do it without Mum (Suzanne) and Dad.”
The family also own and run the Rolling Pin Bakery and Patisserie in Magill, which Mr Donnelly opened alongside his brother James as a 21-year-old.
