GLANDORE locals will tell you Patio Coffee Roasters serve up the best coffee in Australia – and that view is now official.

The South Rd roaster and cafe last week took out the gold medal for milk coffee at the Golden Bean Awards for its Ethiopian-grown Areka roast.

The single-origin coffee was selected from more than 400 entries in the category to be judged the country’s best milk coffee at the competition in Port Macquarie, NSW.

Patio head roaster Andrew Mitchell says he was blown away when their coffee was awarded gold after the blind tasting.

“It was completely unexpected as it was a brand new one – we only received the crop two weeks before the competition,” he said.

“It’s a massive compliment and reinforcement of what we do here because it’s about as level of a playing field as you can get at a coffee competition.”

The awards, held last month, is the world’s largest coffee roasting competition and conference with Australia’s leading roasters going head-to-head across 10 award categories.

Judges tasted coffees with just a scorecard and no information about who was behind them. Skilled baristas made the lattes on the day.

Patio also took home five other medals from the competition – a silver in the filter category and bronze in milk, espresso, filter and decaf.

More than 1400 total entries were received for this years event.

Crazy coffee creations from around the globe

Areka has flavours including bubblegum, honey, red grape and tropical fruit to produce a high-quality coffee that Mr Mitchell says is different, but always palatable.

“The point of difference is it’s a really decadent, high-quality coffee but it’s also affordable and something you can drink every day,” he said.

Barista Joe Jones said latte lovers and flat white fanatics have been flocking to Patio to not only try the award-winning roast, but purchase bags of beans.

The wild-grown beans are at such a premium the next batch won’t be coming in until next year, though a small amount of Areka is still available at the Glandore store.
