Target Fulham Gardens will shut its doors for the final time tomorrow.
The Tapleys Hill Rd retail store has served the local community for more than 40 years and
been the first employer for many local teenagers.
But on Saturday, August 22, it will permanently close to make way for a Woolworths, Dan Murphy’s and a variety store, as part of a $12 million upgrade.
Centre property manager Theo Kaldis said work would now get underway on “modernising” the complex, which also houses a Foodland supermarket.
“Personally I’m sad because I am a local but we have not had any real kickback,” Mr Kaldis said.
Under the plan, the Dan Murphy’s will be on the centre’s southern side and have a drive-through and the BWS outlet will close and the space turned into two new speciality shops.
Mr Kaldis said the centre’s redevelopment had created “a lot of excitement about the place”.
He expected the centre would employ more people than it currently does once the redevelopment was completed.
Mr Kaldis said there had already been much interest in leasing the new shops.
When if first opened, Target shared the complex with an Arrow supermarket and a Red Apple Restaurant, until they closed in the early 1990s.
Target opened at outlet at Westfield West Lakes in 2013 while Woolworths closed an outlet at Harbour Town, West Beach, in April last year.
