A resident who spent thousands sprucing up the verge in front of his Mile End home was gutted to find a “selfish” thief had stolen about a dozen succulents.

Craig Harrison, who has spent “a few thousand dollars” to upgrade the verge at the corner of Goodenough and Parker streets, found the plants stolen last week.

Initially, the plan was to turn the verge into a community garden, but being aware it also had to be functional, he planted succulents and creepers to form a ground cover.

Pavers were also laid to help people get in and out of cars.

“The succulents had started to take off and then someone comes and nicks them,” Mr Harrison said.

“The fact that they just dug it up is just selfish.”

Mr Harrison has been overwhelmed with support from this community since going public with the theft.

“About a dozen people have contacted us saying we have succulents, come and get them,” he said

“A woman called Shona turned up in a ute with succulents in the back and gave them to us.

“We have been so encouraged by it.”

For years, Mr Harrison had asked West Torrens Council to upgrade the verge, a compacted road base that was dusty and hot in summer.

Eventually, the council removed the concrete-like base and replaced it with loam.

He implored future plant thieves to do their research.

“We were encouraging people to snap a piece off and grown their own,” Mr Harrison said.

“They could have snapped off a bit and we all could have enjoyed it.

“But they had to take out the whole plant.”

He urged anyone in the community who noticed odd behaviour to post it on a local Facebook page.

“I’m appealing to the old Neighbourhood Watch mentality,” he said.
