A feasibility study into a re-do of Glenelg jetty worth tens of millions of dollars – including a possible hotel – has begun and the results will be known by the end of the year.

New look for Glenelg

Options for a redevelopment of Glenelg Jetty – worth as much as $110 million – will be known by the end of the year.

A review commissioned by the State Government will investigate the feasibility of revamping the jetty to as much as 30m wide and 300m long.

Options being considered for the popular tourist attraction include a hotel, an aquarium and other recreational activities.

The cost of those upgrades has previously been estimated at $110 million.

The report will be completed before next year and guide the rejuvenation of the seaside icon.

Infrastructure Minister Stephan Knoll said Glenelg was one of the “premier tourism areas” on Adelaide’s coastline and that would be boosted by an upgraded jetty.

“It’s the only coastal precinct that has a direct tramline connection from the city making it one of our most accessible metropolitan coastal precincts,” Mr Knoll said.

“If other spheres of government and the private sector come to the table, the possible Glenelg Jetty redevelopment will become a world-class tourism drawcard.”

Liberal MP for Morphett Stephen Patterson said the community had been touting an upgrade for “many years”.

“Not only will the jetty become a massive tourism drawcard, but as it draws more tourists and locals to the precinct, it will also help existing businesses thrive,” Mr Patterson said.

The upgrades were first raised in 2015 when plans, including the hotel, were presented to Holdfast Bay Council by consultant Mott MacDonald.

The government committed $20 million in last year’s State Budget for the redevelopment of the jetty on the agreement that money also be contributed by Holdfast Bay Council, the Federal Government and private developers.

Until being destroyed in a storm in 1948, Glenelg’s jetty had its own tea rooms, public baths, an aquarium, a police shed and a three-storey kiosk.

At 381m, it was almost twice as long as the 215m current one opened in 1969.

Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson was overseas and unable to be contacted.
