Despite missing nine games during the 2021 Adelaide Footy League season, Morphettville Park on-baller Celestina Dona has won the division one best and fairest.
After missing round one due to Norwood SAWFL commitments, Dona played three games before breaking her hand and taking a prolonged spell on the sidelines.
The 24-year-old’s performances from return in round 12 were inspirational however, dominating from the middle and subsequently leading the Kangaroos to a premiership over Payneham Norwood Union.
Amassing 17 votes Dona was surprised by the individual achievement but said the premiership was much more satisfying.
“I was no way expecting to win after missing two months. I was honestly stoked,” Dona said.
“The grand final was absolutely the highlight of my season though. It was a tough game against a great side in PNU but it was such an enjoyable game and that last quarter was just incredible – goal after goal.”
Dona has played at Morphettville Park for four years now and credits the positive culture at the club for her development.
She said her time at Norwood has also taken her skills to another level.
“I’ve really developed the majority of my skills well over the last couple years and I think regular training and games with Norwood has been key,” Dona said.
“When I started I couldn’t do a proper ball-drop so I’ve come really far.
“The culture at Morphies is always amazing as well. The girls are so great and that really helps and motivates me to perform at my best.”
With her fast growth in the game and her recent achievements, Dona looks set to make a major mark at state and national level.
While it’s not a priority, the star mid hasn’t ruled out playing in the AFLW.
“One day I hope to, who knows? I’m only 24, anything can happen,” she said.
“If I can keep putting the time in and keep a strong mindset I think I can get there.
“It would be a very big commitment but it’s not something I would turn down if the opportunity presented itself.”
