Sacred Heart College set for an upgrade

SACRED Heart College has publicly released its $15 million merger plans with Marymount College, featuring two new buildings as their centrepiece.

The college’s Mitchell Park middle school upgrade will include a new ‘Marymount’ building, featuring 18 co-ed classrooms over two storeys.

There will also be a new ‘Good Samaritan’ centre with a chapel and communal space, to be used for assemblies and performances, seating more than 300 people.

Principal Steve Byrne said the overhaul would help cater for an expected 900 enrolments in 2019.

Work is scheduled to start at the beginning of the summer holidays.

The 120-year-old college has had a campus at Percy Ave for 60 years, and Mr Byrne said it had undergone “constant changes but nothing of this scale”.

“It’s an exciting project,” he said.

“We hope to start demolition work in December, once the students finish. It’s like all renovations and building projects — there will be short-term pain for long-term gain.”

Marion Council has released the school’s plans for public comment until October 25.

They also include a two-storey addition to the school’s ‘Le Rosey’ building, featuring a staff area, and new performing arts space.

“We also have a couple of specialist areas that will be dramatically improved, like ... food technology and the science laboratories and we’ve expanded the sports facilities to accommodate netball.”

There will be new covered walkways, storage areas and the number of carpark spaces will double.

Mr Byrne said the school hoped to complete about 80 or 90 per cent of the work next year, in time for the Marymount students to move in during 2019.

Previously, it had planned to stage major components of the upgrades over two years.

“The motivation (for the change) is to be ready to start the new campus on day 1, 2019,” he said.

“It also reduces duplication costs in starting up and closing down buildings.”

The Brighton Rd senior school campus will not be affected by the changes.

A Marion Council spokeswoman said a date was yet to be set for its planning panel to assess the school’s development application.
