A $45 MILLION upgrade of the Port Canal Shopping Centre – soon to be Port Adelaide Plaza – will create “the largest retail and dining hub” in the western suburbs, according to the centre’s owner.

Construction of the new building – which will connect to the existing Coles and Kmart building – is well and truly under way at the Commercial Rd centre, owned by the Precision Group.

The new dining area on the eastern side of the building is expected to be complete by April.

Among the features are wide awnings, alfresco ceiling fans and gas heating.

Potential tenants include cafes, burger joints, a Japanese restaurant and an Asian fusion eatery.

Development manager Michael Gillett said the new shopping centre would reflect the changing needs of Port Adelaide’s community.

“We believe the plaza will complement the growth and revitalisation that Port Adelaide is now experiencing,” Mr Gillett said.

The shopping centre’s footprint will grow by more than a third – expanding from 19,000sq m to just under 30,000sq m.

The number of shops will more than double from 28 to 60.

As well as the dining options, it includes an Aldi supermarket, childcare centre, medical centre, bank, Australia Post and a People’s Choice Credit Union branch.

There will be more than 1000 carparks on site – all free.

Once complete, the shopping centre will be worth $133 million — making it the most significant retail development in Port Adelaide in 40 years.

The redevelopment is expected to create 120 jobs during construction and a further 160 full-time retail jobs following the project’s completion.

The Precision Group has partnered with the Badge Group of Companies, one of Australia’s largest privately owned builders, to deliver the plaza.
