Port Adelaide icons joins forces to celebrate anniversary through beer

Beer is the way to many farmers’ hearts so when Mark Dyson from Quality Wool was looking for a way to celebrate his company’s 30th anniversary there was an obvious choice.

Two Port Adelaide icons have joined forces to release a new beer to celebrate a major business milestone.

Pirate Life co-founder Michael Cameron and Quality Wool founder Mark Dyson are great mates and both former Fremantle boys.

Mr Dyson also happens to be Pirate Life’s landlord at Port Adelaide.

He has owned the old Dalgety wool store since 1998 and it has been home to Pirate Life since 2018.

“Back in 2015, when we first started Pirate Life, we set up in Hindmarsh, but we always had a vision for opening something in Port Adelaide,” Mr Cameron said.

“Mark and I are both from Freo originally and we’d seen how good Little Creatures Brewery had been for Freo.”

Pirate Life made its first beer in Port Adelaide in November 2018 and then opened its doors to the public in March 2019.

Since then, Pirate Life has become one of the major draws in the Port Adelaide area, attracting up to 4000 people a week in the peak summer period.

“I’ve always said, any port city is a good place to be, so I wanted to help influence people to come to Port Adelaide,” Mr Cameron said.

Quality Wool also has an office in Port Adelaide and Mr Dyson established his wool buying and exporting business up back in March 1, 1991.

When he was exploring ways to mark this year’s 30th anniversary, with the threat of Covid-19 looming, a large event was ruled out early on.

But if there’s one thing farmers love, it’s a cold beer, so Mr Dyson asked Pirate Life to create a beer for his rural clients.

The Q Draught beer will be distributed as part of roadshows throughout SA, Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

“We’ll be rocking up at football and netball matches, at men’s sheds, and getting together at wool stores in the bush,” Mr Dyson said.

“We’ve got an extremely loyal client base, so this is a great way to thank them. All the boys in the bush love a beer.”
