THE people who transformed the old Harris Scarfe department store in the city will build a $38 million office tower in the heart of Port Adelaide.

Developer epc Pacific — one of Australia’s largest investment and development companies — will start work on the six-level office tower within three months.

The building, which is expected to go to the Development Assessment Commission within weeks for approval, will create up to 275 jobs during construction.

Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan this morning announced work on the tower, to be built on a carpark at the corner of Nile and Robe streets, will be finished by 2018.

“This is one of the key measures the State Government is taking to inject more life and more economic activity into Port Adelaide,” Mr Mullighan said.

“Port Adelaide is going well at the moment and we are seeing a huge amount of confidence and we are seeing the old pubs being refurbished and reopened and new businesses starting up.

“With the announcement of the submarines being built at Techport, Port Adelaide is going to be the focus of a lot of economic activity in the future.”

Mr Mullighan said there would be a “cross-section” of public servants moving into the building from the Primary Industries and Regions SA fisheries and aquaculture division, Service SA, Renewal SA, the Environment Department and the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Work is already underway on the $25 million Quest Apartment building, just up from the proposed office building on Nile St, and is expected to be finished by November.

Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson expected the building to create “a lot of excitement”.

“There are very few buildings that are actually for sale now because of this pending boom we are seeing down here,” Mr Johanson said.

Managing director of epc Pacific, Patrick Smith, said the “next generation” building was designed to fit in with its surrounds.

The company headed up the $385 million Rundle Place development in the city, which includes a basement Coles supermarket and specialty stores.
