A Findon service station could be demolished for an expanded, two-storey recycling plant expected to process up to 1000 tonnes of material each year.

The existing Rob’s Fuels and Leo’s Cans and Bottles would be bulldozed for the new plant at 142 Findon Road.

It would be the second fuel station in Adelaide to house a recycling centre after plans were lodged for a similar project in St Agnes.

The Findon blueprint includes a purpose-built, two-storey building with offices and staff amenities and would operate from 8.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Saturday and 10am to 3pm on Sundays, a report tabled by Town Planning Advisors revealed.

“The subject site is currently used and operates predominantly as a petrol filling station and also a less intensive component as a bottle and can recycling station,” it stated.

“The proposed development does seek to eliminate the petrol filling station land use and solely operate the site as a bottle and can recycling facility.

“The application seeks to establish a single land use to the site and by doing so increase the efficiency of the operation by providing modern facilities and improved vehicle access.”

It would collect up to 1000 tonnes of empty aluminium cans and glass bottles each year, which would be processed for recycling at another location.

However, the company did not expect the number of customers to increase, with weekends “normally yielding a high amount of traffic”.

“It is estimated that on a quiet day 60 people will visit the site and during busier periods the facility can service up to 150,” it stated.

“The amount of visitors to the site and amount of bottles and cans processed per year is not anticipated to change as a result of the land use.”

A spokesman for Rob’s Fuels and Leo’s Cans and Bottles declined to comment until its application had been assessed
