Parking would be restricted on narrow streets in Semaphore and surrounds under a Port Adelaide Enfield Council plan.

Cars would only be allowed to park on one side of the road in many cases – and not at all if the street was deemed too narrow.

Councillors supported the plan, which will be sent out for community consultation, at a meeting on Tuesday night.

However, that consultation may not happen for some time because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Under the plan, parking would be restricted to only one side on streets with a width between 5m and 7.1m.

Parking would be completely banned on streets less than 1m wide.

A staff report said Port Adelaide Enfield had received many complaints from residents about parking, as well as traffic and pedestrian access, in narrow streets.

Many streets through Semaphore, Largs Bay and Exeter are less than 7m wide but the policy would apply across the council district.

Under the Australian Road Rules, there must be at least 3m of open space on a road to allow cars to pass through.

Cr Kat Mitchell questioned whether public consultation should be delayed because of coronavirus, saying the current restrictions could last six months.

But Port Adelaide Enfield city assets director Mark Buckerfield said he expected the policy would be “divisive” among the community and require face-to-face meetings.

“The issue of parking in the streets has been one for a long time,” Mr Buckerfield said.

“It would be good to have those verbal discussions face-to-face.”

A timeframe for the public consultation was yet to be set.
