A man had been released on bail less than 24 hours before he torched a car and then assaulted two police officers, a court has heard.

Oliver Campbell, 25, of Woodville South, appeared in the Port Adelaide Magistrate’s Court on Monday, via video link from custody, where he told the court police “flunked the f**k out of me”.

A police prosecutor said Mr Campbell was arrested after he was found to be acting disorderly and suspected of arson.

“They took him into custody, as they were waiting for the caged car … he spat directly at the police officer,” he said.

“He was restrained on the ground, they put him in the caged car, he kicked out … and hit the left bicep of the police officer.

“He’d only just been bailed and was clearly unable to comply.”

Police allege they responded to reports of a man acting disorderly at Findon before 3am on Sunday when they discovered a Holden sedan on fire in a Crittenden Road driveway.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and police found Mr Campbell a short distance away.

He was allegedly found to be in possession of a screwdriver and a lighter.

Upon hearing the allegations, Mr Campbell, and his family members in the body of the court, became agitated and started screaming out.

“They flunked the f**k out of me,” Mr Campbell said from custody.

Several family members stood up in the court before promptly being told by the sheriff’s officer to sit down.

“It’s all right son, we’ll get photos,” one family member responded.

Defence counsel for Mr Campbell said her client would contest the charges and his family had concerns for his mental health.

“He has quite strong family ties, strong family support,” she said.

“I understand they’ve been trying to get Mr Campbell a mental health assessment.”

Defence counsel said Mr Campbell underwent a mental health assessment about 12am on the 28th before being released again.

“He was assessed and then subsequently released and then arrested a short while later with respect to these charges here,” she said.

“They’d (the family) had been trying quite hard to get him assessed.”

Magistrate Paul Bennett said he was concerned Mr Campbell had been bailed in “concerning circumstances” before offending again.

He remanded Mr Campbell in custody and ordered a bail inquiry report and a prison health service report.

Mr Campbell will next appear at the Port Adelaide Magistrate’s Court later this week.
