Morphettville Park Sports Club will soon undergo a major revamp costing nearly $4 million.

The upgrade includes demolishing the old clubrooms — and constructing a replacement more than double the size.

The new building will include four changerooms — with dedicated facilities for female players — a kitchen, bar and a community function area for up to 200 people.

Work will officially begin at a groundbreaking ceremony featuring Mayor Kris Hanna and Sport and Recreation Minister Corey Wingard this Sunday (August 4) at 2.30pm.

The project is being jointly funded by Marion Council, the State Government and the SANFL, with the bulk of the money ($3.2 million) coming from the council.

The State Government chipped in $500,000 and the SANFL $50,000.

Mr Hanna said the project would help meet local needs — with community spirit fostered right from the start through a free barbecue at the opening ceremony.

“The new clubrooms will meet AFL standards and include two female-friendly changerooms to cater for increased interest in women’s sport,” he said.

The sports club is currently used by more than 800 people, but there are no defined changerooms for the club’s 160 female Australian rules footballers or visiting players.

Quinn St has been permanently closed from Raglan Ave to Denham Ave to make way for the clubrooms.

Other improvements include widening the oval to create a safer environment for players and spectators, and expanding the carpark.

Morphettville Park Sports club president Troy Rosser said it was “a very exciting time” for the club.

“This redevelopment is a reward for our members and volunteers, who work so hard,” said Morphettville Sports Club president Troy Rosser.

“We can’t wait to see our new home take shape.”

South Australian company Sarah Constructions is undertaking the building work, which is expected to be completed in March 2020 in time for the football season.
