One of the biggest amateur football clubs in the state is set to receive a major upgrade to its clubrooms, with a western suburbs council saying the project would get more people into sport.
Under a proposal by Port Adelaide Enfield council, Largs Reserve – home of Port District Football Club – would have its existing clubrooms make way for the construction of a new facilities including viewing balcony, function room, bar and kitchen and new changerooms for both male and female players.
A new carpark will also be built, increasing the current site from 79 spaces to 98.
Mayor Claire Boan said the proposal was aiming for a “big focus on community”.
“This is part of our commitment to help local clubs grow in the local community through provision of infrastructure that enables them to throw open their doors for more events, activities and functions,” Ms Boan said.
“We are excited about the proposed new clubrooms at Largs Reserve. This is part of our wider plan of upgrading sports facilities across the city under our sports development plan.
“As has been the case for all council sports infrastructure over recent years, the new Largs Clubrooms will have expanded facilities for all players, including new accessible and female changerooms to help more people take part in local sport.”
In 2022, Port District won its first A-grade premiership in 30 years after defeating Prince Alfred Old Collegians at Norwood Oval in the division one Adelaide Footy League grand final.
Districts comfortably sit as one of the most successful clubs in the history of the Adelaide Footy League with the second most division one premierships, behind only Adelaide University.
This year, the club has bolstered its side with the signings of AFL premiership player and former Port Adelaide ruckman Scott Lycett and SANFL star Joseph Haines, entering the season as hot favourites for another flag.
In November last year, Lycett said he was keen to help the club back to premiership success.
“I definitely want to win a grand final with my best mates,” he said.
“Obviously it’s not like winning a premiership at AFL level but I think playing for fun with mates and achieving that success would be a special feeling and something I’d remember for years to come.
“Joining was a very easy decision in the end and I’m excited to achieve success with the side.”
