What made you decide to work in education?
I had some great teachers who changed my life and I wanted to make a positive
difference in other children’s lives.
What’s been your proudest moment as an educator?
A personal highlight for me was being presented to the Queen and meeting President Bill
Clinton on the same day. The proudest moment at Immanuel for me was opening our
senior school named after one of my former teachers, Margaret Ames.
And the most challenging moment?
As a Principal the students end up becoming part of your extended family. Any time
tragedy occurs in their lives is a difficult and challenging time.
What’s in your lunch box?
Usually an apple.
What was your top subject at school?
I loved Geography and Technical Studies, and ended up teaching Technical Studies.
And your worst?
English, despite having some great teachers.
If you could give students one piece of advice, what would it be?
Every graduate of Immanuel leaves with this advice on a card from me:
“Dream more than others think is practical
Risk more than others think is safe
Expect more than others think is possible
Care more than others think is wise.”

What is your go-to soundtrack?
Bohemian Rhapsody or anything by Coldplay. Sung loud and in private.
What was your favourite book as a teenager?
Our next door neighbour always brought over the Readers Digest compilations and
growing up in a small country town they broadened my view of the world.
What diary date will be a highlight of the 2020 school year?
January 31, our opening service, celebrating 125 years since the start of Immanuel
College, will be hard to beat.
