A topless bar in Adelaide’s west has been slammed for a “slave night” where patrons can bid on women for sexual shows – promoted with “offensive” images of women in chains.

A topless bar in Hindmarsh will hold a “slave night” where patrons will be able to bid on women with fake money to perform acts including “shower shows”.

The Land of Promise promoted the March 27 event on its Facebook page with a cartoon image of two scantily-clad women, adorned with auction numbers and bound by chains around their hands and necks.

The Facebook post – removed following questions from The Advertiser – said patrons would be given “slave dollars” with every beer they bought in the lead-up to the event.

Attendees would then be able to use the money to “bid on your girl of choice” on the night.

“All girls ans (sic) staff with (sic) be dressed in slave attire,” the post read.

An image accompanying the post, which included the crude cartoon, said bidders could win “things like private dances, table dances, shower shows (and) topless pool games”.

One Facebook comment said the post was “highly offensive”.

Land of Promise manager Leanne, who declined to give her surname, said the Facebook post and event “wasn’t meant to be offensive in any way”.

She claimed it was based on an event in July 1847 where a man auctioned his wife at the pub.

“It’s certainly not meant to insinuate women are slaves,” Leanne said.

“It’s a historical thing.”

She said she understood why people might be offended by the imagery because of “political correctness and everything” but “it actually wasn’t meant to be offensive”.

The Land of Promise regularly holds special events including jelly wrestling and a “lesbian lust special”.

Despite removing the Facebook post, the pub intends to press ahead with the event.

Minister for the Status of Women Michelle Lensink has been contacted for comment.
