Monday marks 10 years since avid doughnut lovers flocked to West Croydon in droves – including two singles who would meet and eventually marry – doing anything in their power to get their hands on a pack of original glazed Krispy Kreme deliciousness.
Before July 15, 2014, all Krispy Kremes in SA came from interstate – it was almost a cardinal sin to not bring a box of stale doughnuts on the plane back from Melbourne or Sydney.
All of that changed amid wild scenes that wintry morning, when hundreds of people camped out in the overnight rain for the opening of Adelaide’s first store.
Cars lined up down Port Road blocking traffic and it even prompted a robbery – a knife-wielding bandit stole six boxes of doughnuts from teenagers.
As the store plans a massive celebration on Monday with free doughnuts, the milestone is a reminder for many the day the city went crazy for dough.
For married couple Blake and Brooke Pulic, it will forever be the day they locked eyes in the queue and fell in love – and a year later included the store in their wedding celebrations.
“It was love at first sight,” Mr Pulic, 30, said. “I went with a mate of mine and when we started to line up there was a girl that sort of caught my eye, and I guess from her end I kind of caught her eye too.
“I went up to her and said ‘my name’s Blake’ and we spent the next eight to 10 hours from there just talking and getting to know each other.
“The date’s always marked on our calendar. We got married on September 22 so that’s always going to be a celebration on that day as well, but I think July 15 every year is more of a celebration because it’s the day we met and the day we found each other.”
Head of Krispy Kreme and Manufacturing for SA/NT Carly Higgerson said their team had been following Pulics’ love story since they met in line 10 years ago.
“We knew about them getting engaged from meeting in our line up and then we were invited to their engagement party and their wedding celebrations as well,” Ms Higgerson said.
“We love that they included us in their special day so we made them some custom doughnuts that fit their colour scheme, – we just made sure they were well taken care of.”
Ms Higgerson said she felt honoured to witness the love for Krispy Kreme to grow each year.
“The joy for Krispy Kreme has not diminished and the opportunities that we get to not only create magical moments for our customers but also with communities has been amazing,” she said.
On Monday, Krispy Kreme’s flagship West Croydon store will deliver an abundance of birthday celebrations, including the giveaway of thousands of doughnuts from 3pm to 5pm.
