SA government under fire over scathing child sex abuse report

A man has pleaded guilty to having sex with a girl in state care after police found a naked video of her on his phone.

Justin Paul Schulze, 44, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday to unlawful sexual intercourse and possessing and producing child exploitation material.

During Schulze’s home detention bail application in November, the court heard police attended a Woodville address on October 6 in relation to a missing 15-year-old child who was under the Guardianship of the Minister.

They observed Mr Schulze driving off, who was disqualified from driving.

The court heard after he was pulled over he told police he was there to meet the child.

Police reviewed his phone and found a video of the victim laying down on a bed with her top pulled down and her genitalia exposed.

Craig Caldicott, for Schulze, told the court at the time the victim told Schulze in a text message that she was 17-years-old.

Magistrate John Wells denied him bail after he heard Schulze wanted to be released to his partner’s address where two children were living, including a two-year-old, and a 19-year-old.

“I’m not releasing him to a house where there are teenage children,” he said.

When the Messenger contacted the Department for Child Protection after the bail hearing, a spokesperson said they take all allegations of sexual abuse against children and young people extremely seriously.

“The department works closely with SAPOL towards the ongoing safety of children and young people in care,” the spokesperson said.

“This matter is the subject of a criminal prosecution; and it is not appropriate to provide any comment on the details of the case.”

On Wednesday, Magistrate Karim Soetratma committed Schulze, of Adelaide, to the District Court for arraignment in August.
