Housemates Lewis Hill and Dave Maunder put on 308-run first wicket stand for Brighton

HOUSEMATES Lewis Hill and Dave Maunder created Adelaide Turf history when they put on a 308-run first-wicket stand for Brighton this month.

THEY are Brighton Cricket Club's record-breaking odd couple openers.

Housemates Lewis Hill and Dave Maunder created Adelaide Turf Cricket Association history at Kingswood Oval on November 9 when they put on a first-wicket stand of 0/308 in their A1 match against Unley.

Not only was it a club record partnership, but ATCA chief executive David Heyzer says he cannot recall a larger stand in his 36-year involvement with the association.

But their knocks were very different - just like the way they bat.

Hill, 23, played a swashbuckling hand of 228 not out off 218 balls, including 27 fours and five sixes.

Maunder, 31, played the anchor role, scoring 76 from 189 balls in the 68.5 overs Brighton faced before it declared.

"I'm very opposite to him," Maunder says.

"He can take attacks apart, I'll settle the ship.

"I'll only hit a loose ball if it's there, whereas he's got the ability to create shots wherever the ball is bowled, which is what he was doing on the weekend.

"It was good fun and I enjoyed every second being out there, especially at the nonstriker's end watching Lewis just unleash."

Hill says his partner "plays within himself, while I do my stuff at the other end".

The differences do not end there.

Englishman Hill has been at the club for little more than a month.

The Leicestershire Second XI batsman returned to Australia to play alongside Justin Ifould, whom he played with at Southern District from 2009-11.

Maunder has donned the whites for Brighton since joining the club as a 15 year old.

They are living together with English teammate Leo Churms in Maunder's Sheidow Park home.

"A week before I came out I was told I'd be living with him and he'd be my opening partner," Hill says.

"I got here on a Thursday and we played our first game on the Saturday."

Maunder says he and Hill are also poles apart in the kitchen.

"Leo and I are teaching him how to cook. All he really cooks is pasta."

Unley will resume at 3/25 this weekend.
