Holdfast Bay Council to install bike lanes on Anzac Highway, Glenelg, to connect routes and improve safety

ANZAC Highway is to get new bike lanes installed to make it easier and safer for cyclists to get to a popular beachside spot. Here is where they will go.

HOLDFAST Bay Council will install bike lanes along Anzac Highway, between Adelphi Tce and Brighton Rd, using a $200,000 State Government grant.

Work will include modifying the roundabout at the intersection of Gordon St and Old Tapleys Hill Rd to make it safer for cyclists.

The lanes will connect the Coast Park Bikeway, the Westside Bikeway, the Sturt River Linear Park shared path and bike lanes on Tapleys Hill Rd.

The need for the new bike lanes was identified in a 2013 Holdfast Bay bike plan that found there were 26 crashes involving cyclists in the area between 2007 and 2012.

Bike SA chief executive Christian Haag said “missing links” between bike tracks put people off riding.

“This area of Anzac Highway is effectively a ‘bicycle interchange’ where several key commuter, recreation and tourism routes converge, so this corrective investment will see continued increases in both residents and visitors who will ride in and through the area,” Mr Haag said.

“That’s good news for local businesses.”

The plan will not reduce parking on Anzac Highway, council city assets manager Steve Hodge said.

Work will start by the end of the year and finish by June next year.
