A new $1 million sensory and nature playground has been given the go-ahead for one of Glenelg’s most popular parks.

The new waterfront playground in Wigley Reserve will replace the existing equipment at the park and will be built mostly with natural materials including tree stumps, logs and ropes.

It will include climbing tunnels, in-ground trampolines, swings, slides, a log climbing structure, stepping boulders and a sensory nature-trail, as well as 10 new stations in the fitness area.

Holdfast Bay Council had previously promised $500,000 towards the project but, at its most recent meeting, agreed to double the contribution after failing to secure a State Government grant.

The original sum had already been allocated and the top up will be included in the 2020/21 budget.

Designs for the new playground began a year ago.

A staff report said the Bay had a million visitors each year.

Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson said the new Wigley Reserve playground would enhance Glenelg’s reputation as a tourist destination.

“This large-scale playspace and fitness hub will offer something more to locals and visitors as it’s been designed to suit all ages, abilities and interests,” Mrs Wilson said.

“It’s also close to public transport and walking and cycling paths, making it a great community asset, which by this time next year, will be even better.”

Work on the new playground is set to begin in April 2020 and be completed within six months.
