The Henley Hawks have netted a grand-slamming win after being named the best tennis club in Australia.

The Henley South Tennis Club received the honour at the 2018 Australian Tennis Awards, announced in Melbourne last night.

President Liz Campbell was overwhelmed with the win for most outstanding club, describing it as a “tremendous honour”.

“We are incredibly proud that a community tennis club from SA has been recognised as one of the best clubs in all of Australia,” Ms Campbell said.

“It is testament to the exceptionally hard work of our executive committee, coaching team, volunteers and our loyal members.”

Ms Campbell said the club, on the corner of Burford and Lexington roads, prided itself on being family-friendly and welcoming, where tennis can be enjoyed by everyone of all ages and abilities.

“We have fun both on and off the court which is one of the key elements of our club culture,” she said.

“We believe this culture is what sets us apart from many other clubs.”

She credited the Henley Beach South club’s passionate coaching team and its enthusiastic committee members on its success, which has seen members grow from 170 to 220 in the past year.

This season, the club, which boasts former premier Jay Weatherill as a past member, has 17 senior teams and 13 junior teams competing across three metropolitan tennis competitions – its highest number in recent years.

“There is a real sense of pride in being part of the Henley South Tennis Club family,” Ms Campbell said.

Coach David Grainger says: “The kids are the future of the club and anything I ask for to try and improve my clients’ experience, they support.”
