Have we found Adelaide’s most dog-friendly cafe? Owners of Malobo, at Henley Beach, hope so

A BLT for the human at the table and a slice of quiche for the four-legged companion – that’s a pretty standard order at this beachside Adelaide cafe.

A BLT with a slice of quiche for the dog is a surprisingly usual menu order at Malobo.

That’s one reason why Henley Beach business owners Lukas and Mattis Vanzati are stepping up their game to turn the restaurant into one of Adelaide’s most dog-friendly eateries.

“We’re set up for it – we have this great outside area combined with the sort of people that come to Henley Beach,” Mattis says.

“It’s an active lifestyle and customers tend to be responsible dog owners.”

Mattis and Lukas are planning to sell freshly baked dog treats at their restaurant in the near future.

“We have our own bakery based in Findon – it’s a family business, so as part of that we’re going to start making little dog treats,” Mattis says.

“So we’re trialling different recipes at the moment and then we’ll start selling them ... instead of customers buying a croissant for the dog.”

With the help of barista Marie Andrea they also launched an Instagram page dedicated to tail-wagging visitors at the restaurant.

“It helps create an experience for the customers,” Maria says.

“They get excited when they see their dogs on the page and it helps you connect better with the customer.”

The page, called Dogs of Malobo, was launched last month and already features more than 70 pets enjoying their time at the beachside eatery.

“We get all these dogs come in, we wanted to recognise them but didn’t want to flood our main Instagram page,” Mattis says.

“It’s sort of amusing for people to see their dogs on there.”

Malobo was launched at 257 Seaview Rd, Henley Beach, in 2016.

It’s open for breakfast and lunch every day and dinner most days.
