A GLENELG South wine bar has won a year-long fight for a liquor licence after dropping its plans to sell takeaway alcohol.
Mischief and Mayhem Wine Lounge owner Marie Hart applied to the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner to sell alcohol at her Broadway business on August 14 last year, finally receiving approval last week.
She originally wanted to sell wine and spirits from small-batch producers for people to take away as well as to drink in the bar.
Because of the takeaway component, the AHA wanted Ms Hart to apply for a hotel licence, which requires the applicant to prove there is a need for a hotel in the area.
However, she dropped the takeaway idea after an objection from the Australia Hotels Association (AHA) on behalf of nearby pubs the Holdfast Hotel and the Bay Motel Hotel.
Ms Hart this week said she was glad to finally be granted a restaurant licence.
“It took a while but we got it,” Ms Hart said.
“It’s excellent – lots of customers are very relieved as well.”
Ms Hart – the daughter of Broken Hill artist Pro Hart – will now sell alcohol from small wineries and distilleries, for customers to drink at Mischief and Mayhem.
She had a temporary special circumstances licence to operate during the Fringe Festival from February 14 to March 13, but has not been serving alcohol since.
Instead, she has sold breakfasts, light lunches and coffee, as well as art.
Holdfast Bay Council approved Ms Hart’s application for the change of use from an office to a restaurant in June after previously being concerned about a lack of parking.
The council has been pushing for the State Government to allow city-style small bars in Glenelg, particularly on Jetty Rd, but a review in July recommended only extending the area they were allowed in to North Adelaide.
