Findon streets left unkempt as council ignores overgrown verges

Verges in a western Adelaide council are overgrown and full of weeds – as much as half a metre high. Has your council mowed your verge or does it look like a mess?

Neglected council verges have left western Adelaide streets looking like a mess, with weeds growing up to half a metre high.

The unmowed strips in Findon, the responsibility of Charles Sturt Council, have left residents fuming – and some frustrated homeowners have clearly taken to the task themselves.

A visit by The Advertiser on Tuesday morning found verges along Hammond Rd – and streets running off it – were significantly overgrown and had clearly not been attended to by the council for months.

Mallow and soursobs dominated many of the verges, as well as overgrown grass.

Woodville South resident Duane Massey said he drove through his area every day and faced the “unsightly” verges.

“I just get really depressed when I see front verges looking like that,” Mr Massey said.

“It’s poor from the council. It’s theirs to look after and it’s let go to look like that.”

He said it made the area look “so poor”.

“I live next to Woodville Oval. There’s grass that’s two feet high on some of the verges and people are coming to the area from all over Adelaide and have to go past that,” Mr Massey said.

“We’re all paying our rates for them to (mow the verges) so why aren’t they?”

Charles Sturt Council chief executive Paul Sutton said warmer weather and heavy rain had resulted in verges growing faster than usual.

He “strongly encouraged” people to mow verges themselves if they were able to.
