THE City of Adelaide Clipper Ship may finally have a place to call home after being brought to Port Adelaide nearly three years ago.

The State Government chose to mark the 30th anniversary of the replica 1850s brigantine, the One and All Tall Ship, being on water by announcing a strategy for preserving and celebrating historic boats and ships.

Urban Development Minister Stephen Mullighan revealed Dock 2 in Port Adelaide as the Government’s preferred home of the world’s oldest clipper ship, the City of Adelaide.

An estimated 250,000 Australians can trace their ancestry to the City of Adelaide Clipper Ship which was built in 1864 to carry early settlers to South Australia.

It was rescued from a muddy bank in Scotland, where it had sat for 20 years, and made a final voyage to South Australia in 2014.

It was brought to Port Adelaide and despite passionate volunteers dedicating hours of work to its restoration and more than 200,000 people coming to view the ship, it has remained in “temporary accommodation” at Dock 1.

Mr Mullighan said the schooner Nelcebee is to be based alongside the City of Adelaide.

The One and All and the Falie are to remain at McLaren Wharf.

“Over the past six months, as part of the broader redevelopment of the Port Adelaide district, the government has asked an external consultant to put together a strategy on how we deal with our maritime heritage here in the Port,” Mr Mullighan said.

“It is absolutely critical we continue making these special efforts to protect what is absolutely precious and unique about our maritime history,” he said.

He said the strategy provided a location for these ships on a day-to-day basis as well as a place in Port Adelaide where the boats can be repaired as needed.

Mr Mullighan also reiterated the Government’s commitment to provide a minimum of $3 million in funding toward maintaining the vessels over the next five years.
