Opponents of Port Adelaide Football Club’s contentious proposed $20m overhaul of Alberton Oval have released their own vision for the site.
Power’s upgrade of its home ground included a soccer pitch and two indoor basketball courts.
The Alberton Oval Residents Action Group’s “community preferred” masterplan stems from a community workshop held in June.
There were six main themes including the need for “more green” – with proposals for a native sensory garden, more trees and benches, breeding boxes for birds and other wildlife and a mini botanic garden.
The plan also includes recreational space for children, a nature play zone, a sporting precinct with running tracks and fitness stations, an environmental education area and a playground.
Residents also wanted to see the dog park improved, with suggestions for a higher fence around the park, the addition of garden beds and benches, more trees, bushes and a rotunda.
The workshop feedback also included the need for a general community space, with suggestions of a Lone Pine Memorial area to hold ceremonies like on Anzac Day, a community garden, and a covered picnic and barbecue area.
Other ideas also included a Men’s Shed, and a public art space.
Alberton resident Pasquale Rinaldi said the Covid-19 lockdown highlighted the importance of open space to the community.
“For the community that use the park on a daily basis, this is their vision,” he said.
Port Adelaide Enfield Council is currently undertaking consultation on the football club’s plan, which is open for feedback until 5pm, Friday, August 27. See the details at haveyoursay.cityofpae.sa.gov.au/alberton-oval
