Upgrades to the busy Jetty Road precinct at Glenelg are set to be completed in time for the peak summer trading season.
Work began in April on the $3.6m upgrade of Chapel St and Hindmarsh Lane, just off Jetty Road.
Extra seating, improved lighting, public artwork, more trees and new public toilets are all included in the upgrade.
Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson said the project would help improve the attractiveness and accessibility of the public spaces in and around Jetty Road.
The creation of ‘Chapel Plaza’ is part of the first stage of delivering the Jetty Road masterplan.
Hindmarsh Lane will be upgraded to include new public toilets, a parent room and a changing places toilet for the profoundly disabled.
The changing facility will be a first for Jetty Road and Holdfast Bay and will include an adult-sized change table, ceiling hoist, a peninsula toilet, privacy screen and additional circulation space to meet the needs of people with complex disabilities and their carers.
The project was originally planned for 2020, but it was postponed during Covid-19 following consultation with local businesses.
Work is now taking place over winter to avoid the busiest trading months.
The east-west pedestrian access in Hindmarsh Lane, alongside the Coles building, was closed from Monday this week, June 28.
Access will reopen when construction is completed.
