Environment Minister David Speirs says he is “keen” to work with Marion Council to repair the popular Hallett Cove boardwalk.
Mr Speirs said the 8km attraction, which stretches from Hallett Cove to Marino, was important to the local community and a drawcard for tourists.
“The upkeep of the boardwalk is the responsibility of the local council,” Mr Speirs said.
“However, as the local member I’d be keen to work with them to try and find a solution.”
More than 5000 people have signed a petition calling for the timber boardwalk to be fixed after the council was forced to close 2.5km of the path due to drainage problems.
A safety report found the path – built in the 1990s – would only be safe to walk on for up to another 10 years due to its age.
Marion Council could also rebuild the entire timber boardwalk with a longer-lasting material such as fibre-reinforced polymer or plastic.
The petition – started by federal Labor MP Amanda Rishworth – urges the State Government and Marion Council to come to a funding arrangement to repair it.

“The overwhelming response to my petition is proof of just how loved this boardwalk is by residents of Hallett Cove and so many people across South Australia,” Ms Rishworth said.
“I urge both the City of Marion and State Government to listen to the community and work together to ensure every necessary step is taken to save the boardwalk.
“Permanent closure simply cannot be considered an option.”
Earlier this month, Marion Mayor Kris Hanna said it would likely cost millions of dollars to rebuild sections of the timber walkway
“We are financially healthy but this will have a huge impact on our budget,” Mr Hanna said.
“This beautiful coastline is for all of Adelaide to enjoy, so in due course we will humbly be approaching the State Government for help with this project.”
