A $2.7m upgrade of the Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club is being planned, with a new kiosk, change rooms and improved disability access.
The club is seeking in-principle support from Holdfast Bay Council to allow it to move forward with the first stage of the project next month.
Stage one includes disability and aged access to the first floor via a lift, reducing barriers for disabled people by providing suitable amenities and a ramp; and a new kiosk to create a meeting place along the coastal path.
The second stage of the project, which the club hopes to start in April next year, involves creating more storage for training craft, as well as upgraded change rooms
In April 2023, the club aims to undertake a third stage of the project, with updated community spaces at the facility.
The club is aiming to complete the entire project by the summer of 2025, to allow it to host the International 505 Class World Championships Regatta.
A report to council said the proposed redevelopment would address and assist in overcoming current facility limitations and assist in meeting the needs of members and the community now and into the future.
Local MP Nicolle Flint is behind the proposal, writing to council voicing her support.
“The current clubrooms require significant updates in order to facilitate increased participation across a range of community stakeholders including women, young people, senior Australians and people requiring disability access, as well as improved access for the local community more generally,” she said.
“Additionally, the redevelopment of the site would continue to allow the club to bid for and host competitions, such as large sailing regattas and championships at the state, national and international levels.”
Holdfast Bay council will consider a recommendation at its meeting next Tuesday night to provide the club with in-principle support to seek grant funding from the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, to allow it to undertake Stage 1 of its redevelopment master plan, on the basis that support is limited to Stage 1 works only, is in-principle only and does not include a financial contribution from council.
