Concept plans for a $1.5 million upgrade of a reserve near Port Adelaide have been unveiled, with the much-needed facelift set to have an added benefit.
Port Adelaide Enfield Council released further details for its planned upgrade of Naval Reserve at Birkenhead on Monday, including a bike loop track, nature play area, mini football goals and basketball court.
The upgraded space is also set to reduce the incidence of flooding in the area.
The reserve is also the proposed site of a new stormwater basin, required as part of the Lefevre Peninsula Stormwater Management Plan, to help reduce the frequency of flooding for the Birkenhead area.
It is located in the Semaphore Road east catchment – with a large portion of the catchment consisting of residential developments in low lying areas.
The subcatchment area – consisting of Hughes, Close and Moore street, along with Fletcher and Semaphore roads – is susceptible to flooding, in particular when there is a rain event coinciding with a high tide.
Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Claire Boan said it was an important project for council.
“This is an important community reserve that needs a facelift, and it also plays a significant role for our stormwater management on the lower peninsula,” she said.
“We are excited to bring our ideas to the community, to hear their priorities for this reserve, as we work to improve stormwater management and create an exciting public space.”
Consultation is open at haveyoursay.cityofpae.sa.gov.au/birkenhead-naval-reserve until November 30.
There is also an information day being held this Saturday, November 7, from 10am to 12pm at Fletchers Slip sales centre, Jenkins St, Birkenhead.
The final concept design is due to be approved by council in February next year, with a detailed design of the open space scheduled for July 2021, ahead of construction in 2022.
