A 19-year-old Mansfield Park man who told a magistrate he was doing 110km/h in a 60km/h zone because he was late for work has been slapped with a 15-month disqualification, fine and impounding fees.
Appearing in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, John Pham Tan Diep pleaded guilty to driving at a dangerous speed, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, contravening a condition of a provisional licence by speeding and driving with no P-Plates on his vehicle.
It was 10.28am on Thursday, September 10, when police were conducting speed detection duties on South Rd at Angle Park.
Police saw a black Porsche Boxster travelling at 110km/h on South Rd at Angle Park in a signed 60 km/h zone.
Diep’s car was impounded for 28 days.
Representing himself, Diep said the reason he was speeding was because he was late for work.
Magistrate Stefan Metanomski said it was a serious traffic offence.
“This was a time of day when you expect traffic to be around, 10.28am, and your speed was highly excessive,” he said.
“Your speed presented not only a danger to yourself but also to the community. It is clear that you don’t have the responsibility to hold a driver’s licence.”
Diep was convicted, disqualified from driving from 15 months, fined $1100 and ordered to pay an impound fee of $1113.
