Baby Squeak, Splash and Marina are doing swimmingly

SEVEN calves were born during this season’s baby boom, but just three — Splash, Squeak and Marina — have survived. We’re pleased to report they are looking happy and healthy.

THE surviving Port River dolphin calves are doing swimmingly, according to local dolphin watchers.

Seven calves were born during this season’s baby boom, but just three — Splash, Squeak and Marina — have survived.

Splash and Marina are now five months old and the baby of the sanctuary, Squeak, turns four months this week.

Conservationist Marianna Boorman, who is out on the water four times a week, said she regularly sees Squeak and Marina splashing about in the river, with Squeak the life of the party.

“We are very fortunate to see Sophie (Marina’s mother) and Marina and Mouse (Squeak’s mother) and Squeak on a regular basis from the land,” Ms Boorman said.

“Squeak and Marina both appear very healthy and have even been observed bow-riding and learning to catch fish. “We see Squeak the most often and are noticing that he is a very social, playful, cheeky young dolphin.

“We have observed him interacting with many members of the pod and also observed him chasing the cormorants.”

Squeak is fast becoming a sanctuary favourite following in the footsteps of his cheeky big brother Hunter, who he has been observed playing with at Garden Island on a number of occasions.

He and Mouse are often seen at Garden Island as well as the inner Port.

Ms Boorman said Splash and her mother Aidan were not seen as regularly but that when they were last seen a few weeks ago “all seemed well”.
