Big-name actors who prefer to work out unbothered love it – and so do the Sydney Swans. Now Russell Crowe’s gym is coming to Adelaide.
Co-founded by the legendary Australian actor and former professional league player Chris Feather, 98 Gym is opening in February in North Plympton.
The pair became mates after Feather met Crowe on the set of his 2010 Robin Hood movie and became the actor’s personal trainer, following him around the world to help him prepare for roles, including in Superman.
The first 98 Gym opened in Sydney in 2010 after Feather and Crowe turned the actor’s private gym into an exclusive member’s-only set-up.
It turned into a stand-alone gym and from 2018 franchises began to open in New South Wales, as well as one in both Brisbane and Melbourne.
The gym, opening at 136 Mooringie Ave on February 10, is committed to “turning training into an intrinsic part of your wellbeing”, according to owner Jack Plenty.
“We have five highly-qualified coaches that have to go through a rigorous process,” Mr Plenty said.
It comes as The Advertiser reveals the winner of SA’s best gym, as voted by readers.
Mr Plenty told The Advertiser the Sydney gym was home to big-name actors who “like to remain anonymous”.
“They also have singers such as Rita Ora, Ned Brockman the runner, and loads of other athletes, most recently Daniel Ricciardo,” he said.
The gym will feature a mixture of both cardio and weights-based exercises throughout the 308 sqm floor space, featuring two strength classes, two conditioning classes, one cardio workout, and a “game-day” session on Saturdays for clients aiming to achieve all sorts of fitness goals.
“(It’s) a strength- and conditioning-based environment,” Mr Plenty said.
In 2022, the Sydney Swans partnered with 98 Gym, which is now housed in the Swans’ HQ at the Royal Hall of Industries.
“We’re excited to partner with 98 Gym as the organisation’s focus is on whole of body, whole of mind, and maximising the performance of every individual,” said Sydney Swans chief operating officer Drew Arthurson.
The Swans will make use of 98’s new North Plympton facilities when they touch down in Adelaide for the AFL’s Gather Round in April this year.
“They’ll be using the gym throughout the week,” Mr Plenty said.
