A $15.2 million gas power plant will be built at Outer Harbor under plans before the State Government’s development panel.
Singapore-based Nexif Energy will build the 154mW gas turbine plant at Snapper Point on the north eastern corner of the Le Fevre Peninsula.
It will be used in period of peak power use – about 10 to 15 per cent of the time.
Nexif signed a $93.7 million, 25-year deal with the government in August to lease emergency power generators purchased by the previous Labor government following blackouts.
Generators are currently housed by the government at Elizabeth on the old Holden site but are expected to move to Outer Harbor mid next year.
The new power plant would then be operational by the end of 2020.
The Department of Energy and Mining has provided crown sponsorship to the development application.
A letter from department acting chief executive Vince Duffy said the project would “provide various benefits to the state including by assisting in improving the reliability of the power system”.
Nexif Energy already operates a grid-scale battery in South Australia – the first to be entirely privately funded.
It is part of a $500 million wind farm project at Lincoln Gap, outside Port Augusta.
Once complete, Lincoln Gap will be home to 59 wind turbines capable of producing enough electricity to power about 155,000 households in SA.
Nexif senior development manager Torb Stolpe said construction of the power station would create about 70 jobs.
The project it out for public consultation until Friday, January 10.
