Construction of the new $7.8 million Whyalla jetty is underway, with nearly 50 piles being driven into the seabed in the past week.
The 45m jetty will have an unusual shape, with its loop structure not seen anywhere else in Australia – the only other known similar design being in Denmark.
“It will be a fantastic tourism opportunity for the city,” said Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin.
“The design was chosen by the community and I think it was very brave of them. It will help Whyalla stand out.”
The planning process has taken two years, after the previous jetty was closed in 2017.
“The rebuild was out of necessity because the old one was terrible and we had to shut it down because it wasn’t deemed safe,” Ms McLaughlin said.
“The new jetty will revitalise the foreshore.
“It will be great for fishers and it will also bring a new social side for the city – a lot of locals have missed their jetty.”
The project is being undertaken by Adelaide-based company Maritime Constructions, with construction scheduled to finish in mid-2020.
