A popular Upper Spencer Gulf sailing identity known for his wit and generosity will be celebrated tomorrow by friends and family.

Whyalla expat sailor Trevor Beaty was known for his championing of local tourism and devotion to the waters of the Upper Spencer Gulf.

Alongside a band of dedicated locals, Trevor created The Spencer Gulf Cruise in an effort to showcase and promote tourism in the regional ports of Whyalla, Pt Augusta, Port Pirie, Port Broughton and Wallaroo.

Trevor moved to Whyalla as a toddler, remaining a local until 2000 when he moved to Moonta after the loss of his beloved partner Jennifer.

A representative from Trevor’s tight-knit sailing crew said his boat, a Duncanson 26 named “Bijou”, was a familiar sight in local waters.

“We’re looking forward to raising a glass and sharing a yarn or two in celebration of a selfless man dedicated to the Upper Spencer Gulf waters,” they said.

“Sailors would come from all along the coastline of Australia to experience his hospitality – he was a good man who lived a good life.”

Trevor’s daughter, Catherine Greener, said his sharp wit and dry sense of humour were legendary

“With Trevor’s passing goes the last of the true gentlemen, a real character who loved life and lived it to the full,” she said.

“He gave everything for his family, would always help his friends and do anything to help his community.

“He was dearly loved and we will forever miss him.”

Trevor’s love of the sea was born as a child, during his time as a member of the Whyalla Sea Scouts and continued sailing into his years of retirement.
