Whyalla residents want to be consulted on the future use of three local school sites which are closing to make way for a new secondary campus.
Stuart, Edward John Eyre and Whyalla high schools will close when a new $100 million school, which will cater for 1500 students in Years 7-12, opens on Nicolson Ave.
The new state-of-the-art school, which will include a three-storey building with a performing arts theatre, outdoor amphitheatre and gymnasium, is set to open in 2022.
Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin said residents must be consulted about any future uses of the three high school sites.
“The community has concerns over these sites and wants to see them used and not left to get run down and vandalised like some primary school sites have in the past,” she said.
“With the new school opening in 2022 we will be encouraging the relevant authorities to conduct extensive public consultation with our community to get its views on these sites and hope the government has clear plans in place well before the new school opening.”
Ms McLaughlin said discussions within the council had included using the sites for sporting facilities, cultural centres, community hubs and housing that would create more building jobs.

Member for Stuart Dan Van Holst Pellekaan said the government was considering the best options for the sites.
“We are working very closely with Mayor McLaughlin and the City of Whyalla to see what is going to be best for Whyalla and the best possible future uses for those sites is exactly what we intend to pursue,” Mr Van Holst Pellekaan said.
It was announced on November 30 that 650 tonnes of steel from the Whyalla Steel Works would be used for the construction of the new high school.
No time frame has been given as to when an announcement on the future use of the schools will be made.
