MESSENGER Community News is for the first time in its 68-year publishing history venturing to regional SA with the launch of The Upper Spencer Gulf News.
The hyper-local news website will deliver the stories that matter most to the residents of the Iron Triangle, from Whyalla to Port Augusta and Port Pirie.
It is News Corp SA’s first ever local masthead in the region, published under its community newspaper division Messenger Community News and partner publication of The Advertiser and the Sunday Mail.
News Corp SA managing director Ish Davies said it was “hugely exciting” to launch a new masthead in regional SA.
“With the launch of The Upper Spencer Gulf News digital masthead we are looking to capture the enormous appetite we have seen for local news in our metropolitan publishing,” Mr Davies said.
“The Advertiser’s long-term campaign, ‘Fair go for the regions’, has already demonstrated our intent in supporting regional South Australia.
“Our new digital masthead builds on this, with our investment connecting local regional communities with unique news and information.”
The Upper Spencer Gulf News will be a digital-only publication updated daily with exclusive news content and stories that celebrate the local community.
It will cover a wide range of important community news including local government, crime, development, education and sport.
The new title follows in the footsteps of Messenger Community News’s other successful digital-only community website – The City, which was launched last June.
Local reporter Daniel Stringer, who was born and raised in the region, has more than four years’ experience reporting community and regional news.
He said he was looking forward to sharing your stories.
“It’s great to have the opportunity to return to the area I grew up in and report on the issues that are affecting these communities,” he said.
The Upper Spencer Gulf News was the first in a series of new digital mastheads to be launched in regional SA.
“We look forward to expanding our regional presence further in the near future,” Mr Davies said.
