An independent analysis of five years of NAPLAN data has revealed the top 10 primary and high school test results in the South East.
Over that five-year period, Whyalla Town Primary School, in Whyalla, had higher Year 5 yearly results than any other school in the Upper Spencer Gulf region, scoring an average of 2480.5 each year.
Sunrise Christian School Whyalla, in Whyalla Norrie, was a close second in the region with an average score of 2471 while Melrose Primary School was the third best with an average score of 2437.6.
Whyalla Town Primary School Principal Meleika Hobba said it was fantastic to see such a strong result, but reminded parents “NAPLAN outcomes are just one measure of a school’s success”.
“We have worked hard with our students over past few years to grow their mindset in relation to learning to help them see challenges as an opportunity for growth,” she said.
“Students are not afraid to take risks with their learning and see challenges as an opportunity to stretch and grow their knowledge.”
The top performing Year 9 school results were generated at Caritas College, in Port Augusta West, where the average yearly result was 2884.75 over the five years.
The school’s year 5 results ranked fifth best in the region with an average result of 2384 over the last five years.
Caritas College Principal Damian Smith said he was delighted the students had performed so strongly.
“Our teaching and non-teaching staff play an essential role in nurturing and supporting our students to develop a love of learning,” he said.
“Staff work collaboratively to ensure that all students are supported in their learning and wellbeing.”
Mid North Christian College, in Port Pirie, had the second highest results for its year 9s in the region with an average score of 2859.75, while it’s year 5s placed ninth best with an average score of 2286.5.
To determine how each school performed between 2017 and 2021, their average scores for each year were combined and the yearly average found.
Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.
The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website. See the full list of results.
