A regional council has revealed detailed new multimillion-dollar plans to revamp an SA coastal city’s foreshore.
Port Pirie Regional council has revealed plans for a $2m Riverbank Precinct upgrade, with construction scheduled to begin in June.
The development includes upgrades to a range of facilities and raising the boardwalk 3.4 metres above sea level to assist with coastal flood protection and wheelchair accessibility.
Port Pirie Regional Council director of infrastructure Kathryn Johnson said the council was waiting until further into the design process to see where funding for the project would come from.
“We have $1.7 million in total available and we’re looking to fit everything in with the budget we have,” he said.
“What we try and do is pick out features, the parklands are lovely but the picnic facilities are tired so they’re going to be replaced, the playground’s at the end of its life etc.
“We’re hopeful that by December this year we’ll be able to deliver the majority of this work.”
Facility upgrades include a viewing deck, bike track, barbecue shelter, and replacing the current playground with a nature play space.
Consultation with the public began in March 2020 for the redevelopment, which is planned to span from Beach Caravan Park to Flinders View Park.
Climbing Tree director Simon Hutchinson said he was excited for the community to be able to use the nature play space his company is planning to create as part of the development.
“It will be a great draw card for visiting tourists to pop in and explore the foreshore,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“Replacing the plastic playground with a natural one that is more open ended will allow the local kids to get creative with their play time.
