Port Augusta residents have been left disgusted following a string of daylight public urinations, with residents labelling the cleaning of public toilets as part of the problem.
Resident Dianne George received abuse for confronting two adult men who were simultaneously urinating in the middle of the day in the city.
“I went over and said what poor behaviour it was, and was told ‘stick your head up your a*** lady cos we don’t give a f***’,” Ms George wrote on Facebook.
“For the third time this week in broad daylight with people walking past, as a business owner it’s disgusting.”
Port Augusta council candidate Sam Bates said the state of public toilets in the town could be to blame.
“Look, the toilets aren’t the most pleasant. There are accounts of them not being cleaned properly which is a concern,” Mr Bates said.
“I recently stopped my son from using the Gladstone Square one due to the disgusting state it was in. Again another reason why tourists would venture elsewhere.
“And the issue here is that they aren’t being inspected and the company responsible isn’t being held accountable. Standards have clearly slipped without any supervision.”
Port Augusta council provides six public EXELOO Automatic Toilet facilities which are open 24 hours a day (except during cleaning).
The council also provides four public toilet facilities that are closed overnight and during cleaning.
Port Augusta resident Michelle Symons Falconer suggested more needed to be done to address street cleaning.
“This is another reason Port Augusta should invest in a footpath cleaner, this behaviour has been happening for years,” Ms Falconer said in a Facebook comment.
“When I used to work we had to wash down the front of the buildings and footpath daily to stop the stench.”
The SA summary offences act states that it is currently illegal to urinate in a town “elsewhere than in premises provided for that purpose,” including on the wheel of your tyre despite popular belief.
South Australian law states that public urination is an offence with a maximum penalty of $250.
