Police are hunting suspects involved in the theft of Archie the goanna from a Southern Flinders Ranges walking trail

Have you seen this giant lizard? Police say at least two art thieves stole the sculpture of Archie the goanna from a walking trail in the Southern Flinders Ranges.

South Australians are up in arms after “low-life scumbags” stole a large goanna sculpture from an art walking trail in the Southern Flinders Ranges.

Police have launched an appeal to find Archie, a 1.5m long wooden sculpture that had been hammered to a tree on the Germein Gorge Rd trail at Wirrabara. It went missing some time on Thursday afternoon.

Due to Archie’s large size, police say it would have taken at least two people to steal the sculpture.

The goanna was installed as part of the public art trail in September.

Bizarrely, it’s not the only case of lizard thieves in the news today – seven blue tongue lizards hidden in toy dinosaurs were sized by Border Force agents who cracked an international smuggling ring.

Community members have taken to social media to vent their frustration about the theft.

“That’s so disappointing, low-life scum to steal something like this that someone spent a lot of time and effort,” one person said.

“I hope Archie is located and returned back to where he belongs.”

“Some people have no respect, what a scumbag,” another said.

A local woman urged people to monitor online selling platforms for Archie.

“Such terrible news, I enjoyed seeing Archie when going on the Gorge Rd,” a man said.

Police believe Archie was taken between 3.30pm and 5pm on January 6.
