Murray John Miller from Eyre Peninsula in court charged with 19 child sexual offences including unlawful sexual intercourse

The father of a man facing court over alleged sexual offending against a child says he travelled “thousands” of kilometres – and still has no idea about the charges.

The father of an accused child sex offender has arrived at court without knowing what his son was accused of doing, asking media “do you really know what your kids are doing”.

Feral cat shooter Murray John Miller, of Poochera on SA’s Eyre Peninsula, was extradited from New South Wales to South Australia on Friday, and has been in custody until his first court appearance on Monday.

The 24-year-old’s parents attended the Adelaide Magistrates Court as he made no application to be released from custody on bail before Magistrate Benjamin Sale.

Mr Miller is charged with 19 child sexual offences including, two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under 14, eight counts of aggravated indecent assault and eight counts of producing child exploitation material and one count of disseminating child exploitation material.

Court documents released to The Advertiser show the offending allegedly occurred in 2023 at Arno Bay and other locations across the Eyre Peninsula.

Poochera is a small grain belt town 60 km northwest of Streaky Bay.

Outside court, Mr Miller’s father Graham told media he didn’t know why his son had been arrested and said the charges were “not good”.

“Oh really? You must know more than I do. Do you really know what your kids are doing on the computer?” he said. “It’s going to get worse.”

Mr Miller said he and his wife hadn’t been informed about the case.

“Who knows? Of course we’re shocked, wouldn’t you be? We didn’t know this was on today.

“We travelled thousands of ks to get here. I don’t know the detective, I can’t even find him – I’d like to talk to him.”

Police prosecution asked the court for five months to access data from Mr Miller’s phone before finalising the charges against him.

Mr Sale agreed and remanded Mr Miller in custody until December.

Officer in Charge Special Crimes Investigation Section Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Lyons said South Australia Police were absolutely committed to apprehending and prosecuting those who go after “our communities most vulnerable”.

“I commend the investigators for their relentless efforts and our community is safer as a result of this arrest,” he said.
